MFN Legal Briefing: The Climate of Risks for Media in Malaysia

22 February 2023 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Virtual Event Virtual Event

The Media Freedom Network (MFN) is a solidarity network for freedom of expression movements in Southeast Asia.

With the new “unity government” helmed by Anwar Ibrahim and consisting of unlikely bedfellows UMNO and Pakatan Harapan, a lot is being expected of the reform agenda which has been put forward since the 15th Malaysian general election.

However, what are the aspects of Malaysian law which are most dangerous to the media and to freedom of expression and what is the likelihood of these reforms coming to fruition? From the Malaysiakini decision by the Federal Court in 2021 to the investigation of two members of the public for Tweets made during the 15th general election campaign by the Royal Malaysian Police, it is evident that the road towards true freedom of the press and freedom of expression is a long and winding one, with much still to be done, including dismantling draconian, colonial statutes and reforming the police and government in order to inculcate a culture of respect and protection towards the media and community advocates who rightly criticise within the structure of a healthy democracy.

To find out about Malaysia’s regime of laws which target media practitioners and members of the press as well as what we can do to protect ourselves and advocate towards their repeal, do join the MFN Legal Briefing: The Climate of Risks for Media in Malaysia happening on Wednesday, 22 February at 2:30pm MYT in collaboration with AmerBON, Advocates.
