Democracy Classroom: The Philippines’ Dangerous Dependence on the Exploitation of its People

12 December 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Free – $5.00

New Naratif’s Democracy Classrooms are a safe space where our community can come together, articulate our thoughts, and practice democracy.

As Southeast Asians, we are so used to the phenomenon of overseas migration as many of our own countrymen look abroad for better opportunities and to help their families at home. But in the Philippines, what first began as a stop-gap measure has now become a crutch for a nation’s economy. Explore and understand this phenomenon with us in New Naratif’s upcoming Democracy Classroom: The Philippines’ Dangerous Dependence on the Exploitation of its People featuring Teo S. Marasigan!

Don’t forget to check out Teo S. Marasigan’s explainer for more insights into the systemic impact overseas workers have on the economy at home and how such patterns create cyclical patterns of economic addiction which are difficult to break once taken hold.

Teo S. Marasigan is a Filipino activist and researcher. He is the author of Na Kung Saan (In Which), a collection of essays, published by the University of the Philippines Press in 2018.
