MFN Democracy Classroom: Data Journalism and Storytelling

9 June 2023 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Virtual Event Virtual Event

The Media Freedom Network (MFN) is a solidarity network for freedom of expression movements in Southeast Asia.

The COVID-19 pandemic proved how powerful data journalism could be. Newsrooms worldwide, big and small, collected and visualised pandemic data, exceeding what public health organisations could offer. More than that, numerous journalists had also exposed the shortcomings of the data on which health policies were based on.

When done right, data journalism can be crucial to revealing truths and holding governments accountable, but on the other hand, placing data on a pedestal can obscure voices and truths from marginalised communities. How did data journalism come about? Did it change the way we view the world and interact with news? Will data journalism make or break democracy?

The Media Freedom Network (MFN) is hosting our first ever MFN Democracy Classroom on data journalism in collaboration with Thibi.co this Friday, 9th of June at 3:30pm MYT as a place for media practitioners all around Southeast Asia to know more about data journalism, its history, and how to use the burgeoning field as a tool to better inform, educate, and empower Southeast Asians.

This event is supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). Sign up and join our event at bit.ly/mfn-datajournalism
